Sales Reps or Scientists: Who Should We Believe?
The promise of digital dentistry has long been a “perfect” or error-free workflow from impression to definitive prosthesis. For implant prosthetics, dimensional accuracy of the working and final models remains the primary requirement for well-fitting final prostheses despite the transition away from conventional model-based workflows to digital-based design and manufacturing protocols. Furthermore, digital dentistry has gone through exponential growth in recent years, such that new products and workflows are available long before they can be evaluated by independent laboratory and clinical research. This presentation will include a case series of complete-arch implant-supported FDPs using a novel digital workflow (Nexus iOS from Osteon Medical & Keystone Dental) for fabrication of the definitive prosthesis. Various clinical situations and the effect on the definitive prosthesis will be discussed. In addition, conventional techniques for evaluation of prosthetic fit will be presented and discussed. Clinical results will be compared with relevant in vivo research, with robust discussion on methodology used to assess 3-dimensional accuracy.

Dementia Friendly Dental Practices: Advanced Training
The number of adults with dementia in our communities is rapidly growing, with about 7 million people now affected in the US and about 100,000 in Minnesota. More strikingly, these numbers are expected to triple by 2050 and will touch us all because they represent our family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, colleagues, patients, and their care partners. This training will help your dental team create an environment that is safe, respectful, and welcoming for people living with dementia. The Dementia Friendly Dental Practices Advanced Training Program was developed by a team of experts in dementia care and provides up-to-date information and practical tips to help meet the oral health needs of adults with dementia and support their care partners to help maintain better oral health and function. Topics include dementia recognition and assessment, environment and safety issues, ethical and legal concerns, patient management strategies, treatment planning, and patient/care partner support.
Dr. Steve Shuman received his dental degree from Temple University and completed his Fellowship and MS degree in Geriatric Dentistry from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He joined the University of Minnesota faculty in 1989 and is now Professor and Director of the school’s Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program as well as Director of the Division of Hospital & Special Care Dentistry. He also serves on the faculty for the school’s Special Healthcare Needs Clinic and the University’s HRSA-funded Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Expansion Program. Dr. Shuman served on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry for 10 years and was President of that organization from 1998-99. His teaching and clinical programs have been recognized nationally as well as at the state and local levels, including the American Dental Association’s national Geriatric Oral Health Award.
